What Roof Pitch Do I Need for an Attic Conversion?

The angle of your roof is the single biggest factor in whether your attic can become a usable room. Here's how to tell.

Quick Answer

As a rule of thumb, a roof pitch of 30 degrees or more is ideal for a habitable attic conversion. Steeper roofs give you more usable floor area with full head height. Lower pitches can still work for storage or with design solutions - the only way to know for certain is an on-site assessment.

Why Roof Pitch Matters

Roof pitch is the angle or steepness of your roof. The steeper the pitch, the taller the space beneath it - and the more room you have to stand up, place furniture, and move around comfortably. A shallow roof creates a low, cramped space where only the very centre has usable height.

Two things combine to determine usability: the pitch (angle) and the span (width) of your roof. A wide roof at a moderate pitch can still deliver a generous room, while a narrow roof needs a steeper pitch to be worthwhile.

Roof Pitch Suitability Guide

Roof PitchTypical Suitability
Under 20°Generally storage only - limited head height
20° - 30°Possible with design solutions or on wide spans
30° - 40°Ideal - good usable floor area for habitable rooms
Over 40°Excellent - generous head height and floor space

These are general guidelines only. Actual suitability depends on your roof's span, structure and truss type.

Ceiling Height Requirements

For a habitable room in NSW, you generally need a minimum ceiling height of 2.4 metres over a reasonable portion of the floor area. Areas below this can still be used for storage, built-in wardrobes, desks or seating nooks - so a good design makes the most of the lower edges rather than wasting them.

  • 2.4m minimum ceiling height for habitable rooms
  • Lower edges become storage, wardrobes or window seats
  • Dormer windows can add head height where needed
  • The exact rules depend on your approval pathway

What If My Roof Pitch Is Too Low?

A low pitch doesn't always rule out a conversion. Depending on your home and approval pathway, there are options:

Dormer windows

Add vertical head height and light over part of the room.

Roof lift

Raising a section of roof (DA required) to create full height.

Storage conversion

A clean, dust-free storage room where head height is limited.

Smart design

Positioning use around the highest part of the roof.

How to Check Your Roof

You can get a rough idea by looking at your roof from the street - a steep, triangular roofline is a good sign. But truss type matters just as much: traditional "cut" roofs are usually easier to convert than modern trussed roofs. The only reliable way to know is a free on-site inspection, where we measure the pitch, span and structure and tell you exactly what's possible.
