California bungalows swept across Sydney in the 1920s and remain hugely popular in suburbs like Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, Coogee and Drummoyne. Their signature look — a broad, low-slung roof with deep eaves — gives them enormous street appeal.

That lower roof pitch does mean bungalows need a more considered design approach than a steep Federation roof. But their wide floorplans often mean the usable floor area is generous once we've established the head-height zone, and the results are bright, characterful rooms that feel like they always belonged.
